Suite of iOS Apps for Science Education and 21st Century Skills

Carolina Biological Supply has released several science education apps for the iPad and iPhone and are approaching 150,000 downloads. There are free apps, as well as premium and high definition versions, covering science topics from chemical equations and atomic structure to owl pellet dissection.

With the increased use of tablets and other mobile devices in the lab and in the classroom, we are responding to requests from teachers for excellent, validated science content to use on those devices, said Shuana Jordan of Carolina Biological. We have eighteen apps published right now with more on the way, continued Jordan, who as a Product Developer for Carolina and started the apps development program before becoming the eLearning Product Manager.

The most popular app is Chemistry Formula Practice, which stimulates students mastery of the fundamental skill of naming compounds and writing formulas. Other apps include: Owl Pellet Activities; Building Atoms, Ions, and Isotopes; Plant Histology; Animal Histology; Protozoan Identification; and Karotyping.

Carolinas iOS apps are part of a portfolio of digital assets developed and distributed through Carolina Science Online to enhance, not only STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), but also the promulgation of 21st Century skills. These assets include the Twig and Tigtag digital video series, Learnetic Interactive Whiteboard activities, and Filament Games for Science Education.
