Dr. Ronald Receveur, who practices in New Albany, Ind., across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ky., is endorsing a less-invasive, quicker-healing procedure for patients with receding gums.
Using the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, D.D.S., dentists are able to offer an incision- and stitches-free solution.
Through a small needle hole, a dentist uses special tools to gently loosen the gum tissue and slide it over the receded part of the tooth. Since there is no cut or stitching, patients can dont have traditional symptoms of pain, swelling and bleeding.
Receveur said patients have been asking his advice on the new procedure as it becomes more widely publicized, as it has in recent programs on the major television networks.
Receding gums are actually loss of gum tissue along the gumline as a result of periodontal disease, aging process or abrasive teeth-brushing habits, Dr. Receveur said. This means the teeths root structure is exposed and decay can occur below the gumline.
Since healthy gums are crucial for a healthy mouth, treating gum recession is necessary for lasting dental health, he said.
Traditionally, treating teeth with receding gums meant a connective tissue graft. This technique called for cutting tissue from the roof of the mouth, sewing that wound, and then placing the donor tissue at the site of the gum recession. The graft tissue was stitched to the overlying gum tissue. Healing usually took about three weeks.
With the pinhole technique, 95 percent of patients are completely satisfied within one week.
