Former Sudanese Slave, Simon Deng and Talk Show Host Joe Madison Seek Arrest at UN Event, Thursday, April 10
April 09, 2014 --
NEW YORK, April 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The White House issued the following statement on Friday:
"The United States will not stand by as those entrusted with South Sudan's future put their own interests above those of their people. The Executive Order signed by President Obama sends a clear message: those who threaten the peace, security, or stability of South Sudan, obstruct the peace process, target U.N. peacekeepers, or are responsible for human rights abuses and atrocities will not have a friend in the United States and run the risk of sanctions."
UN Press Conference and Rally
The event will begin at 1:30 pm at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, East 47th Street, near Second Avenue in NYC.
At 3:00 pm, the protesters will walk to the Ugandan Mission at 336 East 45th Street (btw/ 1st and 2nd Aves.), which houses the Southern Sudanese Mission, to deliver their demands for peace, reconciliation and an end to fighting.
"This is a matter of life and death for Africa's youngest nation and its people. The administration, Congress and the United Nations can't stand by in silence. I was at the birth of South Sudan when this country and the UN pledged their support. Now is the time to act," said Madison.
Over 4 Million Starving to Death
"After we achieve independence for Southern Sudan, I thought I would never see the destruction and death of my people and my family," said Deng. "But I was wrong. In three months over 30,000 people have been killed, 2 million are refugees, and 4 million are starving to death."
U.S. and International Intervention are Desperately Needed
"The world is turning its back on Southern Sudan, and things will only get worse, unless there is intervention," said Deng. "The people who are displaced, starving and dying are innocent victims. They will continue to die in large numbers unless something is done."
