Younger Patients Seeking Facial Rejuvenation: Survey

Rolling Meadows, IL (PRWEB) April 23, 2014

Cosmetic procedures to rejuvenate and smooth facial skin increasingly appeal to patients 30 and younger, according to surveys by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

The majority of the younger patients are looking ahead, trying to prevent wrinkles and preserve their skin, said Doris Day, M.D., an ASDS member dermatologist who practices in New York City. They view treatments as preventative measures and often also understand the importance of exercise, a healthier diet and lifestyle, she said.

Their attitude is its OK to be older, but they want to avoid the aging process early on as much as possible, she said. Theyre motivated. They know the regimen for aging better. They use sunscreen or stay out of the sun altogether. They eat right, avoiding processed foods. They are coming in to see what they can do now to avoid issues later, to atone for some bad practices in their teen years and their early 20s and improve on that going forward.

Having grown up hearing commercials for cosmetic treatments, younger people are aware of the products, Day said. They are familiar with what the products can do and have no qualms about using them.

ASDS member dermatologists performed 90,000 wrinkle-relaxer procedures and nearly 30,000 soft-tissue filler treatments for those 30 and younger last year, according to the 2013 ASDS Survey on Dermatologic Procedures. Those totals are 50 percent (wrinkle-relaxers) and 63 percent (fillers) higher than the previous year for the same age group.

Dermatologists smooth and relax wrinkles in patients with such products as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin. Soft-tissue fillers Juvederm, Voluma, Radiesse, Sculptra, Belotero and Restylane soften facial creases and add fullness to the lips and face. In both 2012 and 2013, the treatments were the two most popular cosmetic procedures ASDS members performed.

Wrinkle-relaxers and soft-tissue fillers also received top ratings from patients who responded to the 2013 ASDS Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures.
Both treatments received satisfaction ratings of 92 percent.

For younger patients, we are a great source of guidance and help, said Day. Many know quite a bit about technologies, treatments and options. We help them continue to look like the best versions of themselves, so that every decade will be their most natural and beautiful.

What they may not know is that because treatments are very specific, individualized and complex, patients should trust their care only to board-certified dermatologists, she said.

Treatments are not about blowing up like a balloon, she said. Its not about chasing lines or wrinkles or looking done. Its about balance, and thats not always intuitive in terms of technique. When done properly, you look beautiful, but no one can say exactly why. The beauty of the advances in aesthetic products and techniques is that we understand how to enhance and optimize each individual patient to bring out and maintain the very best in them.
