Catch and release is a term that has entered the vocabulary of our culture in the past two decades as sport fishermen practice one local aspect of the global movement to support sustainable fishing. Numerous other elements that are being implemented to protect the worlds fishing stocks. Included are commercial industry initiatives such as eco-labeling concepts and import bans on fish from companies not supporting current fish management regulations and agreements.
The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) is one leader in addressing the issue of sustainability from an industry and marketplace perspective. It helps to promote sustainable approaches to harvested fish products. Other organizations seek to eliminate or limit destructive fishing habits of all sources, from individuals to the largest corporations.
The dramatic worldwide decline in fishing stocks creates difficulties and concerns at many levels, from the small tuna tour guide in New England to the grocery store in Japan. The encouraging news is that there are methods and technologies that are playing a role in slowing and reversing this potentially devastating environmental crisis.
Experts now understand that a holistic approach is much more effective than the target-specific management techniques that have been used. The focus now is to increase public and industry awareness of the issues and solutions to achieve wider success in the effort.
The "Leading Edge" television series, with it's host and noted fishing enthusiast Jimmy Johnson, has teamed with leading environmentalists, fishing sportsmen, industry representatives, and scientists to examine the growth and success of the sustainable fishing movement. Johnson will use the Leading Edge platform to inform the public about this important trend and encourage fishing enthusiasts to support its growth.
