Industry Analyst Jeff Kagan on Diabetes Telehealth Network Launching in Mississippi This Spring

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 02, 2014

According to the Hattiesburg American newspaper, Jan. 23, Mississippi faces the daunting and growing threat of diabetes. They rank second among all states nationwide in disease prevalence. There are more than 373,000 adults in the state with some stage of diabetes.

Industry analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment.

Governor Phil Bryant has joined with the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), North Sunflower Medical Center (NSMC), GE Healthcare, Intel-GE Care Innovations and wireless, Internet and telecom company C Spire to offer people dealing with diabetes more consistent and timely access to clinicians using new telehealth technology right in their homes.

Diabetes takes daily and ongoing management. Too many Americans deal with Diabetes every day. Many simply do not have access to the kind of health care needed to remain healthy on a daily basis. Thats where this plan comes into play, says Technology industry analyst Jeff Kagan.

I congratulate Governor Phil Bryant for his vision and leadership and stepping forward in this needed area. It will mean an even healthier state going forward. This is by no means a magic bullet. It takes so much to stay on top of diabetes and win. However this is a great step in the right direction. It should keep people alive and extend their lives. Other states should pay attention to this effort and jump in as well, says Tech analyst Kagan.

The Hattiesburg American quoted Dr. Kristi Henderson, director of telehealth at UMMC as saying, We know that diabetes is one of the foremost chronic diseases in Mississippi. This program can help improve care coordination and strengthen connections between clinicians and patients, and will serve as a proof of concept as we look to expand this model geographically and to other diseases. Sunflower County has been a pioneer with us for telehealth and often is one of our primary sites in starting up new specialties.

The article aso quoted Hu Meena, president and CEO of C Spire as saying, Were pleased to be involved in an innovative pilot program that promises to make a real difference in the lives of Mississippians who are dealing with the reality of this chronic disease every day. Combining the power of our high-speed mobile broadband communications network with technology solutions from Care Innovations to link specialists at UMMC and patients in new ways will help us deliver more connected, collaborative and cost-effective care.

This is what the future has in store for us. Healthcare, technology and wireless are more than just separate fields like they always were. Today they are pooling their resources and creating new solutions to age old problems. This is truly a case where one plus one equals three. And this is just the beginning. If this is successful, I see it continuing to expand throughout Mississippi and in fact the entire country. This space is just starting to get really interesting, says principal analyst Kagan.
