Inaugural Pacific Gender Justice Knowledge Exchange Conference ready for launch in Samoa

The Pacific Gender Justice Conference will be held in Apia, Samoa on the 14th of February 2014. The Conference will be opened with a keynote address delivered by Samoas Minister of Justice and Courts Administration, the Honorable Fiame Naomi Mataafa, the longest serving woman member of parliament in the Pacific islands. The Conference is organized by Deveena Sudhakar, the Director of Asia Pacific Peace and Unasa Malae Leilani Vaa-Tamati, the leading partner of Samoas largest law firm, Vaai Hoglund and Tamati.

The Conference will bring together influential and distinguished women and men from the public, private and non-government sectors of Samoa to share ideas on achieving gender equality, exchange knowledge and network. The project is supported by the Pacific Media Assistance Scheme (PACMAS), an Australian government funded media development initiative managed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The Pacific Gender Justice Knowledge Exchange will be launched on the evening of the 14th of February 2014. It is an innovative communication for development web portal that aims to promote gender equality through the exchange of innovative knowledge for the common good of all Pacific island women and men, girls and boys in line with achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The Pacific Gender Justice Knowledge Exchange will establish a Pacific Gender Justice Network for Pacific islanders to collaborate on gender justice; it has a Weblog to facilitate conversation on contemporary gender issues in the Pacific; it has an interactive Database; it has a Library showcasing among other reports, country specific Gender Policy Briefs for 16 Pacific countries including Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. It also has an Article repository with a synopsis of thematic gender issues.

Key thematic issues of the Pacific Gender Justice Knowledge Exchange and Conference are the gender dimension of climate change, climate finance and disaster risk mitigation; economic and political empowerment; gender responsive education; the girl child; energy and environmental sustainability; food and water security; gender justice and equality; gender responsive media; good governance; gender responsive health and wellness; human rights; intellectual property and traditional knowledge; science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation; society and culture; the rule of law; trade liberalization and Pacific island women in business.
