User Story: Too Much Work, Not Enough Time

"We had a week and a half turnaround time, so we had to get this done really fast. The seamless interoperability between Avid|DS HD and Media Composer projects let us load sequences directly into the system – the conform time was instant and there were no surprises in the process."

Aiding the transfer time was the format in which the movie was originally shot – high-definition video. Since Jeff did not need to make a film-to-tape transfer, he was able to digitize the footage directly from its original format into the Avid|DS HD system. However, there was one small downside – removing the dead pixels created by the high-definition camera. Fortunately, Jeff was able to use Avid|DS HD's scratch removal feature to quickly eliminate the dead pixels, giving him a completely flawless picture.

Once the conform process was complete, burnishing the "Hell on Heels" footage with the director's final edits became a race against the clock. To add an element of satire to the real life struggle of Mary Kay Ash and her corporate war with Jinger Heath, founder of competitor BeautiControl, the director relied on a number of digital video effects within the Avid|DS HD software.

For example, the movie's opening montage included animated pink Mary Kay product boxes dancing across the screen to a musical beat. While the viewer sees seamlessly integrated picture and audio, behind the scenes, Jeff needed to retime the movement of each box to correspond with the music, which had been loaded beforehand. Typically, this is quite a tedious process, but Avid|DS HD made it easy to sync the video and audio components quickly and precisely.

Concurrently, the movie titles were generated with the 3D text capabilities in Avid|DS HD. As with the Mary Kay boxes, the titles were constantly repositioned according to the director's whims. The final edit, done only a day and a half from the air date, involved changing the color of every title from pink to brushed gold.

Another creative application of the Avid|DS HD's effects was the use of split boxes to convey the tension between Mary Kay and Jinger Heath. One notable sequence shows the two women having a phone conference with their legal advisors. As Mary Kay's anger mounts, the box quickly crowds out Jinger the final push happens when the box retreats then abruptly rebounds pushing Jinger completely out of view.

In another scene, the Avid|DS HD's picture-in-picture capability is utilized to show Jinger Heath's authority over two other characters involved in a three-way phone conversation. The more Jinger asserts herself, the more space she takes up on the screen, and the less space the other two characters have.
