User Story: Too Much Work, Not Enough Time |
||||||
Opportunity comes in all shapes and sizes. For editor Jeff Krebs, opportunity came -- and almost left -- in an overnight shipping container. Here's a user story showing how Jeff used an Avid|DS HD system to meet a tight deadline."Hell on Heels: The Battle of Mary Kay," a CBS prime time movie about Mary Kay Cosmetics founder Mary Kay Ash was only nine days from a locked-in air date when it arrived at Jeff's editing facility in the form of several tapes of rough cuts. The consensus among Jeff's editing team was that, even with a full arsenal of resources, it would be nearly impossible to complete the HD conform, title generation, transitions, conversions, colors and effects within the required time frame. But what seemed like an enormous challenge to his colleagues presented a golden opportunity for Jeff. For months, he had been looking to leverage his extensive editing experience with Avid products to start his own shop, Serial Digital Post. He even knew what machine he wanted to buy as the primary platform for his operation – Avid|DS HD v6.0. [an error occurred while processing this directive] To Jeff, Avid|DS HD v6.0's feature set represented a gateway to unparalleled creative editing, precision, and project turnaround time – capabilities crucial to any postproduction business, especially a start-up. He also strongly believed in the future of HD as a medium for high-end film and television work, and decided that his shop would primarily focus on the growing need for HD video postproduction. Knowing that Avid|DS HD's graphics and finishing capabilities were ideally suited for the work that needed to be done on "Hell on Heels," Jeff decided to take immediate action. After a brief conference with (and a blessing from) the Post Production Supervisor he and his business partner completed the purchase of his Avid|DS HD system which had been planned for months. The timing could not have been more perfect. Jeff took sole responsibility for the dreaded overnight package that contained the unfinished project. He has not looked back since. Several days later, the Avid|DS HD v6.0 arrived at Jeff's temporary editing suite in Toronto because his new facility was still being engineered. After only a few hours of setup, Jeff and his co-editor Kent Petersen went to work recapturing the "Hell on Heels" video footage that had been initially off-line edited on an Avid Media Composer system in Winnipeg and in Los Angeles. 1 2 3 Next Source: Avid [an error occurred while processing this directive]
